I downloaded this great documentary on the 90's Pop Music. There was a part about the emergence of boy bands and a very curious story told by the producer of Take That:
"We were aiming records at 14-15-year old girls and gay men. We wanted to keep an ambiguity because they were being inrerviewed by gay press and straight press, the brief was to play the mystery card, because the thinking was: if a guy says he's gay the little 14-year old girl is not going to put a poster on a wall ( ), but if a guy says he's straight gay guys are not gonna fantasize about him so noone ever in these groups was allowed to admit they were 100% one or the other, not ever."
