BUJINGAI A woman, loads of weapons and a giant tiger with a sword. Does gaming get much better than this? Um...yesчитать дальшеAnyone remember GunGrave? Y'know, the crazed third-person shooter with the skeletal anti-hero armed with the missile-firing coffin? Pah. Well here's Bujingai- it's from the same brains, it's similarly short on realism and long on button bashing, but this time you're a girl-with swords. No coffins? Tsk.
You play as Lau- a girl voiced and modelled on Japanese pop star Gackt- who is a kick-ass samurai femme fatale. She's partial to a spot of wall-running, has prestigious gliding abilities and will slice and dice anything put in front of her faster than a Ready, Steady Cook contestant. There are various terrains for her to battle through; from dense forests to ancient chasms set into the side of a mountain and it all looks just great.
So, gamewise we're off to a good start. The graphics are easily on par with the likes of Nightshade and Shinobi and the backgrounds and characters are extremely detailed. The in-game movies, showing the 'lovely' Lau in all her glory, are particularly impressive and the animation of everything on screen is as slick as an oil tanker spillage.
However, while the game doesn't scant on the number of different areas, variety of settings and number of things to kill, the action remains disappointingly static throughout. Hitting square to make things die is about as difficult as it gets. There is a combo system used to that there's a bit more incentive to keep on pummelling away on the buttons, but basically you're just lining up young Lau on her next sashimi and bashing the 'kill' button over and over again.
